Civil wedding in Italy
Civil Wedding Ceremony in Italy

Italy is notoriously a country of bureaucracy where huge amounts of paperwork are required for anything from applying for a driving licence to having gas or electricity connected in your home.
We often need to jump 5 times through a hoop backwards unravelling miles of red tape at the same time and tipping our cap as we smile sweetly at the right person in order to get there!!!

However, organising the documents required for a WEDDING IN ITALY is one of the easier things to achieve so don’t worry and don’t listen to horror stories about it being impossible.

In our hands, It is very straightforward ,we have been doing this for many years and with never a hitch anywhere along the line.

British Citizens wanting to get married in Italy need to provide the town hall or church where they are marrying with specific documents showing that there are no legal impediments to the marriage.
It is all fairly easy to arrange and we will help you every step of the way to make sure there are no last minute problems with the legal documents.

We have inside contacts at the various British Embassies and Consulates here in Italy and also a very good working relationships with our local Town Halls and so we will constantly monitor the progress of your documents from this end.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IN THE UK

You both need to publish the BANNS at your local registry office and after approx 21 days your CERTIFICATE OF NO IMPEDIMENT will be released.

I would suggest that you approach them in advance to arrange the date for completing this part of the process. Many are fairly busy or only do this on certain days of the week.
However, don’t do the actual documents too far in advance as they are only valid for 6 months from the date of release.

Once this has been done then you need to send both copies (one for the bride and one for the groom) by express courier to myself along with the following documents:

  • LONG BIRTH CERTIFICATE (showing both parents’ names)
  • PHOTOCOPIES OF VALID BRITISH PASSPORT (Must be valid for 6 months after the date of the wedding).
  • PHOTOCOPIES OF BOTH WITNESSES PASSPORTS
  • DIVORCE DECREE ABSOLUTE or DEATH CERTIFICATE if applicable
  • PREVIOUS MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE if applicable
  • DEED POLL (in case of change of name)

 TO BE OBTAINED IN ITALY

Once I have received and checked all of the above documents, I will have them converted to the final Nulla Osta at the appropriate Embassy or Consular office here in Italy.
I never ask you to send them direct to the consulate in Italy as often they can go astray.

I prefer to keep my finger on the situation at all times where the legal side of documents is concerned and I always make copies before sending them off and keep them here in the office just in case !!
PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR ORIGINAL PASSPORTS – ONLY COPIES.

The Consulate will release the final NULLA OSTA and will send it directly to the Wedding Hall or one of our staff will pick it up and take it there for you.

A Declaration of marriage form is required to be completed at the Town Hall where the marriage is taking place 1 or 2 days prior the wedding.

I will accompany you and translate this part of the proceedings for you as part of our Planning Service and as required by Italian Law.

Fees for issuing the Nulla Osta: cost is Euro 78 per person + an extra 10 euros for postal charges which varies from Consulate to Consulate (we will give you the exact information at the time ).

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Under Italian law , if the bride to be has been divorced and wishes to re-marry in Italy, she cannot do this until 300 days have passed from the date of her divorce.

  • You must be over 18 to get married in Italy.
  • You must have 2 witnesses who must also be over 18.
